Ninth Inning Rally Nets Spartans Split vs. Luther

The University of Dubuque Baseball team seen its chance at a berth in the 2014 Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament end on Friday afternoon at Luther College. The Spartans 1-0 loss in game one eliminated them from contention for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament. After a slow start in game two, UD scored five runs in the top of the ninth to earn a 6-3 victory. Spartans closer Justin Naval pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fifth save of the year, tying the school record.

Men's Golf Lead by Three Strokes at IIAC Championships

The University of Dubuque men's golf team entered the third round of the 2014 IIAC Men's Golf Championships with a seven stroke lead. Friday afternoon, the lead was narrowed to three strokes as the hard charging Central College Dutch gained ground with one round remaining. UD enters the final round with a team score of 905 as Central enters with a score of 908. UD and Central have distanced the field with Luther in third place with a score of 925. UD's Eric Wolfe stretched his advantage to seven strokes for medalist honors after he finished with a round of 75 on Friday. All five Spartans are currently in the Top-16 of the field.

Softball Stunned in IIAC Tournament Opener

The University of Dubuque softball team had high hopes when they opened the 2014 IIAC Softball Tournament against the Simpson College Storm. The #5-seeded Spartans was held to just three hits in the 0-8 loss to the #4 seeded Simpson College Storm. Meggie Schmidt, Tori Woltz, and Carlee Grunder all had singles.

Billesbach & Woltz Voted First Team Academic All-District

University of Dubuque sophomores Ainsley Billesbach and Tori Woltz have been named to the First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District (District #8) Softball team. To be selected a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher and be a sophomore or above.

Wolfe Named Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week

University of Dubuque golfer Eric Wolfe has been named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Golfer of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 27, 2014. Wolfe shot back-to-back 70's in the first two rounds of the IIAC Championships over the weekend under difficult conditions at Finkbine Golf Course. His 36 hole total of 140 (-4 under par) has him five strokes ahead for medalist honors.

Football Earns 10 NFF Hampshire Honor Society Members

The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced today the members of the 2014 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college career. A total of 838 players from 267 schools qualified for membership in the society's eighth year, setting a new record for the number of members in the history of the program, which began in 2007. The University of Dubuque is proud to lead the Iowa Conference with 10 new members.

UD to Host Second Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

Tuesday, April 29 through Thursday, May 1, the University of Dubuque will host the second annual Apex: Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity. Events will be held in Heritage Center at various times over the three-day period (see schedule). All events are free and open to the public.

UD Social Justice Class to Hold Second Annual Debate

On Wednesday, May 7, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., the University of Dubuque’s Honors Program will hold the Second Annual Social Justice Debate in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall. The intent of the debate is to provide illumination on two controversial topics. Students will engage in parliamentary-style debating, which involves alternating rounds and audience participation. Doors open at 5:30; the public is encouraged to attend this open event.

Wolfe Leads Men's Golf into Final Weekend

The University of Dubuque will still be in the lead as the 2014 Iowa Conference Men's Golf Championships transitions to Dubuque Golf & Country Club next weekend, but the Spartans saw their nine-stroke lead reduced to seven and a new challenger emerge Saturday at Finkbine Golf Course. The Spartans posted a 306 team score Saturday and bring a 601 total into next weekend's final 36 holes.

UD Relays Excel at Dr. Tucker Open

The University of Dubuque Track & Field teams have been busy over the last two days competing in the Drake Relays on Friday and the Dr. Tucker Open on Saturday. UD women's relay teams brought home two first place finishes including a school record in the 4x400m. Evan Zurbuchen won the Men's 110m Hurdles.

Spartans Split on Senior Day

The University of Dubuque Baseball team split with Simpson College on Senior Day. The Spartans entered the day needing two wins to move closer to the sixth and final spot in the upcoming Iowa Conference Tournament. UD took care of business in the opener with a 6-4 victory but lost 12-6 in game two. Joey Kilsdonk, Vince Parisi, and Steve Ryan were honored between games as graduating seniors.

Spartans Softball Battle #14 Dutch, Prepare for IIAC Tourney

With the possibility of a five-way tie for the IIAC title alive at the beginning of the day, the Spartans along with four others believed they had a chance to capture the league title. The University of Dubuque softball team kept #14-ranked Central College in check, but dropped the doubleader 0-4 in game one and 1-3 in game two. Despite the losses, the Spartans finished the conference in 5th place and will compete next week in the IIAC Tournament hosted by the #1 seeded Coe College Kohawks.

School Records Set at Drake Relays

The University of Dubuque Track & Field program set one school record and tied another on Friday at the 2014 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee. The Spartans Women's 4x200m Relay team broke the 2013 record also set at Drake by 1.82 seconds. Rick Valcin tied his own school record by clearing 16'-4.75".

Casanova Sets Steals Record in Loss

University of Dubuque freshman Daniel Casanova has put himself atop the UD all-time record list for steals in a season. Casanova stole two bases in the Spartans 6-4 loss to Simpson in game one to push his season total to 27. UD lost game two 13-3. Senior Vince Parisi had two hits on the day with a home run in game one and double in game two. The losses dropped the Spartans record to 11-22 overall and 6-15 in the Iowa Conference.

Spartans to Compete at Drake Relays

The University of Dubuque Track & Field program will be well represented at the 2014 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee. The UD women's 4x100m and 4x200m Relays teams were selected while the men's 4x100m Relay team will also compete. Spartans pole vaulter Rick Valcin will also compete. Nearly 8,000 track and field athletes will be competing in 111 events over the course of five days of competition beginning on Wednesday, April 23rd and ending Sunday, April 29th.

Spartans Women's Golf 5th at Clarke Invite

The University of Dubuque women's golf team finished fifth on Wednesday at the 2014 Clarke University Spring Invitational with a team score of 447 on the Par 72, 5,802 yard course on Eagle Ridge Resort North Course. Lauren Smith led the Spartans with a tie for sixth place overall.

Spartans Four Game Winning Streak Snapped

The University of Dubuque Women's Lacrosse had their four game winning streak snapped on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans lost 21-9 to Beloit College in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) matchup at Oyen Field. Bridget Schirmers scored three goals and assisted on a fourth goal. UD is 4-8 overall and 2-5 in the MWLC.

Spartans Win Intracity Game with Clarke

The University of Dubuque Baseball team snapped a four game losing streak with a 6-2 non-conference victory against Clarke University. The Spartans win on Tuesday was the first win against the Crusaders since 2004, stopping a five game losing streak. Sophomore Daniel Karnick made the most of his first career collegiate start by pitching five shutout innings to earn the win.
