Casanova Sets Steals Record in Loss

DUBUQUE, IOWA - University of Dubuque freshman Daniel Casanova (Lake Tapps, Wash./Auburn Riverside) has put himself atop the UD all-time record list for steals in a season. Casanova stole two bases in the Spartans 6-4 loss to Simpson in game one to push his season total to 27. UD lost game two 13-3. Senior Vince Parisi (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) had two hits on the day with a home run in game one and double in game two. The losses dropped the Spartans record to 11-22 overall and 6-15 in the Iowa Conference.

The Spartans fell victum to one big inning in the opener allowing three runs in the third innings with two being unearned in the 6-4 loss. Six Spartans had a hit in the game. Casanova reached base in three of four plate appearances with a single and two base on balls. After Simpson started the game with a run in the first, UD answered with one of their own without the ball leaving the infield. Casanova started the inning with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. With the infield back, Austin McWhite (Orlando, Fla./Wekiva) hit a chopper to third base that allowed Casanova to score and tie the game at 1-1. 

Simpson scored three runs in the third and one in the fourth to push their lead to 5-1 after three and a half innings. UD got one one run back in the fourth on a solo home run by Parisi on the first pitch of the at bat. The Spartans scored again in the fifth with Gaetano Florio (Youngtown, Ariz./Willow Canyon) starting the inning with a drag bunt single. Florio moved around the bases on a wild pitch, a fly out to right field by Casanova, and scored on a sac fly by Will Fogel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South). The Strom added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a 6-3 lead going into the Spartans final at bat. 

The seventh proved to exciting as UD was able to score one run and had the tying run on first base when the final out of the game was made. The Spartans loaded the bases with a single by Austin Monfross (Big Timber, Mont./Sweet Grass), pinch hit single by Jacob Evans (Normal, Ill./Normal West), and walk by Casanova. With one out, Fogel hit his second sac fly of the game on the ball to deep left center that could have tied the game had it dropped. The Simpson reliever forced a comebacker for the final out of the game. 

Josh Eastman (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) took the loss working four innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Game two of the doubleheader was decided with one bad inning for the Spartans as they gave up eight runs in the fourth after leading 3-2 heading into the top half of the inning. UD took a 1-0 lead in the second on back-to-back-to-back singles by Evans, Steve Ryan (Loveland, Colo./Mountain View), and Dalton Garst (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago). 

The Spartans answered two Simpson runs in the top of third with two of their own to retake the lead at 3-2. The rally began with singles by Casanova and McWhite before Parisi doubled to right center to score both runners. Simpson would score eigth runs in the fourth, with seven being unearned to take a 10-3 lead. Three Storm runs in the sixth pushed their lead to 13-3. 

Reed Stempf (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) went 3 2/3 innings allowing six hits, ten runs (three earned), and struck out four in a losing effort. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans and Storm will continue their four game series with another doubleheader on Saturday, April 26th at 1:00 pm. Between games, Joey Kilsdonk, Vince Parisi, and Steve Ryan will be honored during Senior Day.
