Men's Golf Take Lead in IIAC Championships

2014 IIAC Opening Round Men's Golf

 

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque Spartans finished the opening round with all five players shooting under 80 and ltaking the early lead by nine strokes after the opening 18 holes at the 2014 Iowa Conference Men's Golf Championships.

As a team, the Spartans posted a 7-over-par 295 in breezy conditions at Finkbine Golf Course (Par 72, 7,186 yards). Simpson posted a 304 and sits second overall, one stroke ahead of third-place Luther (305) and four up on fourth-place Wartburg (308). Central (313) is fifth, two strokes ahead of Coe (315), while Loras (331) and Buena Vista (341) round out the team scores.

UD's Eric Wolfe leads the medalist chase by two strokes over Wartburg's Ryan Shields. Wolfe eagled the par-5 sixth hole and started with three straight birdies on the back nine en route to a 2-under-par 70. Shields posted four birdies and was looking to finish under par before a double bogey on the 18th hole to finish at even-par.

UD's Josh Schuberg is third after a 73 while teammate Martin Odegard fired a 74 and ends tied for fourth. Mitch Sobotta tied for 14th (78) and Troy Krueger finished with a 79 and is tied for 19th overall.

The Spartans, Simpson and Luther will begin tee times at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 in the second of four rounds of the championships. UD will host the final two rounds at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club in Dubuque on May 2-3.
