Students with Disabilities

The University of Dubuque (UD) complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act of 2008 (ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Fair Housing Act, and other applicable federal and state laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability. UD encourages students with documented disabilities to fully participate in the community of the University of Dubuque. All faculty, staff, and administrators will actively support students with disabilities in all the University's educational programs, services, and activities.

It is the responsibility of the student with a documented disability to initiate a request for reasonable accommodations, based on their disability, by contacting the Accessibility Services Coordinator.

The Accessibility Services Coordinator coordinates services and accommodations for students with disabilities as well as provides support and education across campus regarding the implementation of accommodations. The process involves a review of the student's documentation, consultations with the student to identify appropriate accommodations, and production of a Verification of Individual Student Accommodations (VISA) letter. The University of Dubuque is committed to providing access to all members of the learning community.

Academic Adjustments and Auxiliary Services are individualized to align with each individual's unique need. However, some examples of common adjustments/accommodations are listed below:

  • Additional time on exams
  • Alternative location for test taking
  • Supplemental notes
  • Ability to record lectures
  • Alternative format of text

Implementation Guidelines

The University of Dubuque utilizes documentation guidelines established by the State of Iowa and the Iowa Higher Education Initiative. The criteria for documentation vary depending on the individual's area of need.
