Summary
Head Coach Wendi Wipperfurth and the University of Dubuque softball team finished eighth in the Iowa Conference with a record of 8-28 overall, 1-11 in the Iowa Conference.
Led by UD's lone All-Iowa Conference selection, first teamer and outfielder Gianna Kuras paced the Spartans with a .382 batting average and 13 hits in IIAC play. A rugged Iowa Conference slate was punctuated by UD's offensive barrage in a 17-10 rout of Loras in the Strikeout Cancer game. The Spartans and the Duhawks teamed up to raise $4642.60 for the American Cancer Society in a game where all but one Spartan position player nabbed a hit as they finished with a season-high 16. Both teams have combined to raise $9779.08 since 2012.
After a tough start to the season that featured four, one-run losses in their first six games, the Spartans finished 5-5 against east coast teams in their Spring Break trip to Kissimmee, Florida behind freshman pitcher Mackenzie Kyle and senior first baseman Tori Woltz.
Kyle posted a team-best 2.33 ERA, a 4-1 record, and three complete games in five starts and 27.0 innings pitched. Woltz posted a team-best .438/.455/.469 slash line with three runs, 14 hits, one double, and four RBIs.
Kyle finished the season with a team-best 3.58 ERA while Woltz hit a team-leading .312.
UD saw doubleheaders against UW-Platteville and Buena Vista cancelled due to rain as they played an abbreviated IIAC schedule.
The season didn't play out the way we expected, but a lot of growth happened this year," said Head Coach Wendi Wipperfurth. "A team can learn many things from having a hard year and resiliency is one of them."
"One of my favorite moments of the year was sweeping Cornell," added Coach Wipperfurth. "The girls played well that day and it was a lot of fun. My proudest moment was at the UD honors convocation seeing many of my student-athletes receive awards for their hard work in the classroom."
"I am looking forward to next year. The players work hard and love the game, so I am looking forward to the growth and competitiveness of the returners and newcomers."

Season Overview
Spartan Softball Qualify for Third Straight IIAC Tournament
DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque softball team put an extended losing streak behind them and utilized a pair of All-Iowa Conference First Teamers, utility Meggie Schmidt and outfielder Andrea Smith, and one Second Teamer, pitcher Megan Loes to earn their third straight trip to the IIAC Tournament as the sixth seed with a 15-27, 5-9 IIAC record. UD avenged a season sweep at the hands of Simpson to eliminate the #3-seed Storm in round one of the IIAC Tournament, 7-3, thanks to a two-RBI triple by second basemen Ainsley Billesbach and a two-run homer by freshman catcher Courtney Markin.
In the first year of the single-elimination format, the Spartans advanced to and fell in the semifinals, 7-1, to the eventual IIAC Tournament champions, #2-seed Central. Schmidt, playing left field, opened up the fifth with a leadoff double and later scored on shortstop Carlee Grunder’s RBI-single for UD’s lone run. All of Central’s runs were unearned, aided by five Spartan miscues in the field.
Despite being eliminated by Central, Head Coach Wendi Wipperfurth was proud of her squad's noteworthy accomplishments throughout the season:
"The highs we experienced were worthy of the record books after beating Central and Simpson, each for just the sixth time in the history of the program and making the conference tournament for the third year in a row."
The future looks bright even without senior Meggie Schmidt. A double-digit letterwinner, the 2014 All-IIAC Second Team Selection at second base, Schmidt produced even amidst an 11-game skid. She heated up after joining the team late due to earning an IIAC regular season title with women’s basketball. The Edgerton, Wis. native batted .395 with an on-base percentage of .410 and a slugging percentage of .605 over the 11-game span. Schmidt recorded five-multi hits games and compiled a seven-game hit streak while committing zero errors in the field despite starting at three different positions.
Schmidt joined Smith as the sixth and seventh Spartans named to the All-IIAC First Team. Schmidt finished the season batting .395/.405/.535 with two home runs, 13 RBIs, a team-high 21 runs and 51 hits. She ended her impressive career as a Top-10 career performer in 10 different categories.
Smith, in her first year at UD, hit .280/.325/.398 with 19 runs, two home runs, and 15 RBIs. She also finished 4-for-4 on stolen bases and belted a grand slam as her first-ever home run in win over Loras on April 2.
Loes tossed arguably her best game of the season in 3-1 victory over nationally ranked Central on April 10. The junior allowed just one earned run and two hits in a complete game, 7.0 innings, to give the Spartans an early 4-1 IIAC record. UD swept Wartburg in their first series then split with three straight opponents Loras, Central, and Buena Vista before the skid.
"The 2015 season did not go as expected, but we faced many highs and lows this season because of the number of injuries and inconsistency in play," added Coach Wipperfurth. "However, this team fought through adversity and many times we battled back in the 7th inning regardless of the outcome."
Sporting a 3-3 overall record to begin the season, the Spartans finished 4-6 in spring training. UD defeated Lewis & Clark, 4-3, after a bases loaded walk by third basemen Kelli Gerace as the senior added a .576 slugging percentage, three home runs, six runs, and six RBIs to lead the Spartans over the 10-game trip.
"I am very proud of this team and what we have accomplished over the past couple of years and look forward to what the future holds," added Coach Wipperfurth on her final thoughts.
The Spartans will graduate six senior starters, including three pitchers, but bring back key returner and junior first basemen, Tori Woltz, who was the lone Spartan to receive Capital One Academic All-District 8 team honors as a Wellness & Exercise Science major. Woltz went .296/.361/.407 at the dish with two home runs and 13 RBIs.
