Season Overview
The University of Dubuque men’s golf team made history after sweeping the awards stand at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Championshps. The Spartans won their first IIAC team title, medalist honors (senior Eric Wolfe), and coach of the year (Head Coach Jon Davison) awards since UD won all three in 1975, also coached by Davison. The Dubuque Golf & Country Club provided a fitting venue as UD hosted the final two rounds.
The Spartans recorded three All-IIAC performance s (Top-10) en route to a seven shot victory (1210, +74) over second-place Central (1217, +81). UD’s top three beat four of the eight IIAC teams’ no. 1 golfers. As a result, Coach Davison’s Spartans led every round after playing the Finkbine Golf Course (Par 72, 7186 yards) in Iowa City for two rounds, followed by the final two rounds at the Dubuque G&CC (Par 70, 6120 yards).
Like the Spartans, Wolfe followed suit after leading at the conclusion of every round in a dominant performance. Wolfe blitzed the field and claimed the individual title thanks to an 11-stroke victory over his nearest competitor. The four-time All-IIAC performer’s +4 (288) score was the second-lowest in the IIAC 72-hole championship and was two strokes away (286) from tying the record.
Josh Schuberg (304, +20) placed sixth and Martin Odegard (309, +25) claimed eighth. Schuberg lost the battle for fifth place in a sudden death tie break while four-time IIAC performer, Odegard, won his tiebreak to snag eighth. Mitchell Sobotta concluded the Spartan scoring with a 17th place showing (313, +29).
The IIAC title qualified the Spartans for the NCAA Division III National Championships where they missed the final cut after posting a 624 (+48) score through two rounds at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center (Par 72, 7201 yards). Troy Krueger paced the Spartans with a (154, +10) score and Eric Wolfe finished a stroke behind with a (155, +11). The pair ended up T83 and T120, respectively.
Nevertheless, it was a standout season after they captured nine team titles and five individual titles by Wolfe (3), Odegard, and Mitchell Sobotta. The Spartans were ranked as high #20 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches Poll and were featured in that poll for six weeks total.
