The Psychology major is designed to help students understand how psychologists ask and answer questions, as well as give them a broad background in psychological theory and findings. Understanding where these questions come from and how they are answered means understanding that psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Upon completion of the Psychology major, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding representing appropriate breadth and depth in selected content areas of psychology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of overarching themes, persistent questions, or enduring conflicts in psychology.
  • Understand and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Respect and use critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and, when possible, the scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes.
  • Communicate effectively in a variety of formats.
  • Weigh evidence, tolerate ambiguity, act ethically, and reflect other values that are the underpinnings of psychology as a discipline.
  • Develop insight into their own and others' behavior and mental processes and apply effective strategies for self-management and self-improvement.
