In addition to our academic programs, the department has a rich tradition of bands open to all students on campus. All UD students are invited and encouraged to explore the many opportunities available. Ensembles are open to all university students, regardless of major. Academic credit is available for participation in performance ensembles.

ENSEMBLES

Membership is open to all students regardless of major, and university-owned instruments are available for use. Students may enroll in one or more bands during the fall semester, spring semester, or both.

Concert Band
The University of Dubuque Concert Band studies band literature and provides wind and percussion players of all majors with an artistic opportunity to perform in a concert ensemble. The group also serves as an outlet for vocal and instrumental FPA music majors to study a secondary instrument and provide a lab setting for conducting students and guest artists. Concert Band performs two to four concerts annually.

Two smaller, more selective instrumental groups, Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds, are chosen from the membership of Concert Band.

Concert Band is available for one hour of credit, fulfills ensemble requirements for Music majors, and helps students meet the Fine Arts general education requirement. Six credits of Concert Band fulfills the general education arts requirement.

Concert Band meets in the fall and spring semesters on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:45-3:30 p.m. in Heritage Center's Straatmeyer Rehearsal Room.

Jazz Band
The University of Dubuque Jazz Band performs diverse literature that ranges from big band swing to modern jazz-fusion. No prior experience with jazz, soloing, or improvisation is required. Membership in Jazz Band is by audition which is open to all students enrolled in the class at the beginning of the semester. Initial enrollment does not guarantee a place in the band ensemble. In addition to sharing concerts with Concert Band, the Jazz Band also performs at other special events, both on- and off-campus.

Jazz Band is a one-credit hour ensemble and meets in the fall and spring semesters on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in Heritage Center's Straatmeyer Rehearsal Room. Six credits of Jazz Band fulfills the general education arts requirement.

Marching Band
The University of Dubuque Marching Band is UD's newest band ensemble! Performing throughout the fall semester, the UD Marching Spartans add school spirit and fun at athletic and special events. Scholarships are widely available. Fill out the interest form to be considered for scholarship opportunities.

Marching Band is a one-credit hour ensemble and meets in the fall semester on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m in the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center and on Chalmers Field.

Basketball Band
The University of Dubuque Basketball Band exists to add excitement to sporting events and other special occasions on campus. Basketball Band primarily plays at select home men's and women's basketball games during the spring semester.

Basketball Band is a one-credit hour ensemble and meets in the spring semester on Mondays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in Heritage Center's Straatmeyer Rehearsal Room.

Drumline
The University of Dubuque Drumline is an introductory course to rudimental drumming. No percussion experience is required and all students who participate in UD ensembles and choirs are encouraged to participate. Equipment, including drum pads and sticks, is provided.

Drumline is a one-credit hour ensemble and meets in the spring semester on Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in Heritage Center's Straatmeyer Rehearsal Room.


MUSIC PARTICIPATION SCHOLARSHIP

Incoming students who will participate in one or more music ensembles at the University of Dubuque are invited to apply for a music participation scholarship which is renewable for up to four years if they remain enrolled in one or music ensembles each semester.
