Captain (Ret) Jason Church to Speak as Wendt Center for Character Education Fall Lecturer

On Monday, October 13, the University of Dubuque’s Wendt Center for Character Education will host Captain (Ret) Jason Church, U.S. Army Purple Heart recipient, who will deliver the lecture, “The Power of a Positive Attitude and Standing up to Adversity.” The lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall on the University of Dubuque Campus. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required for admission and may be obtained through the Farber Box Office.

Spartans Host IIAC Women's Golf

The 2014 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Women's Golf Championship begins this weekend, September 26-27, with the first 36 holes of the 72-hole Championship. This weekend's rounds will be played at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The final 36 holes will be played October 3-4 at Dubuque Golf and Country Club in Dubuque. Play will begin at 10:00 a.m. on September 26 and at 9:00 a.m. on September 27. University of Dubuque is the host of the 2014 Women's Golf Championship.

University of Dubuque Instrumental Ensembles to perform in October

The University of Dubuque Wind Ensemble will open the Department of Fine and Performing Arts season with their fall concert titled Passport on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m. in John and Alice Butler Hall in Heritage Center. The concert will feature works by composers from all cultures, including Schönberg, Stalder, and Fukushima. In addition, the University’s Jazz Ensemble will perform its fall concert titled The Birds and the Beats on Monday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m., in the same location.

The University of Dubuque men's cross country team edged out the host Wisconsin Lutheran by five points to earn their first title of the season. The duo of Payton Nevills (27:25) and Alec Bass (27:26) paced the harriers with a sixth and seventh place finish overall on the 8K course in West Allis, Wis.

Women's Soccer Capture 10th Win of Season at Oyen Field

The University of Dubuque women's soccer team ranked #7 in North Region earned their 10th victory of the season and the 199th win for coach Jason Berna at UD. The Spartans jumped out to an early halftime lead 3-0 off goals by Megan Siepler (16:24), Melissa Sawyer (28:39), and Kyleigh McLaughlin (36:11) off an assist by Melanie Prudhomme. UD stretched it to 5-0 for a final over the Coe College Kohawks after McLaughlin added her second goal of the night at 62:29. Just 10 seconds later the Spartans scored again with Sawyer collecting her second goal of the night off a penalty kick.

A chilly start to the final round of the 2014 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Women's Golf Championship with weather hovering at the 40 degree mark at tee-off on Saturday, proved to be better conditions than the previous round. The sun made it’s appearance through the clouds as the final groups finished the final nine holes along the picturesque fall foliage of the Dubuque Golf and Country Club.

Big Plays Spoil Spartans Football Conference Opener

The University of Dubuque football team scored first on Saturday on a 22 yard pass from Zach Fry to Tyler Rutenbeck to give the Spartans their only lead of the day. The host Luther College Norse responded by scoring the next four touchdowns on a 24 yard run, a 68 yard run, a 41 yard pass and a 33 yard run before UD's Fry would scamper from a yard out to cut the final score to 14-28 in favor of the Norse.

Spartans Unbeaten in IIAC After Loras Victory

The University of Dubuque women's soccer team scored first and held a lead throughout most of the game on Wednesday evening, but needed two overtimes to complete the exciting victory over the Loras College Duhawks at the Rock Bowl by a score of 3-2. The last time the Spartans captured regular season victory over Loras was Oct. 21, 2009 which was also the Duhawks last regular season IIAC loss. The series since 2009 has provided three, double overtimes games. In 2009, the Spartans won the IIAC Tournament and advanced into the NCAA Division III National Championships.

Martinez Battles to a Perfect Record in IIAC

The University of Dubuque Farber Tennis Courts were witnessed to a Spartan first on Tuesday afternoon. UD's Arantxa Martinez had a lone #1 singles match left in the regular Iowa Conference season. Unbeaten through six matches, she needed the victory to become UD's first #1 singles IIAC unbeaten women's regular season finisher.
