UD's Department of Fine and Performing Arts to Present Steve Martin's 'The Underpants'

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque's Department of Fine and Performing Arts will present The Underpants, by Steve Martin, at 6:00 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 16-18, 2023, in Babka Theatre, Heritage Center.

The renowned comic actor and author of Picasso at the Lapine Agile provides a wild satire adapted from the classic German play about Louise and Theo Markes, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise's bloomers fall down in public. Though she pulls them up quickly, he thinks the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk. Louise's momentary display does not result in the feared scandal, but it does attract two infatuated men, each of whom wants to rent the spare room in the Markes' home. The prospective lodgers have some underlying surprises of their own.

In The Underpants, Steve Martin brings his comic genius and sophisticated literary style to Carl Sternheim's classic 1910 farce.

The production will be directed by Greg Wolf, MA, assistant professor of theatre.

"There are only five actors and one act. The Underpants is a comedy, it is elegant, and it revels in the time period and the idea that certain themes transcend time," Wolf said.

The Underpants is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.
