Spartans of UD - Johnny Blake

Spartans of UD highlights what makes the University of Dubuque special - the people.

Johnny Blake, of Dubuque, Iowa, is a senior business major and a member of the University of Dubuque baseball team. He recently was named the American Rivers Conference Pitcher of the Year. This season, six of Johnny's seven wins were double-digit strikeout games, and he is tied for second most wins in a single season in school history. Additionally, he threw the third no-hitter in school history earlier this spring and the first since 1984.

How did you get into baseball?

"I grew up around the game and just naturally gravitated towards it."

What do you do to prepare for games?

"On game days, I wake up, get breakfast, and then head to the field to start stretching and getting my mind right."

How did it feel to throw the University of Dubuque's third no-hitter ever?

"It felt great going out there and getting the job done in my first conference game at UD."

What has been the highlight of your baseball career at UD so far?

"The highlight of my baseball career at UD so far is either the no-hitter or the 17-strikeout game I would say."

In your opinion, what makes the University of Dubuque unique?

"The facilities and atmosphere around campus."
