By University Relations Staff

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Rev. Jerry Cannon, DMin, vice president for ministry innovation with the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (USA), will deliver the 2024 Woods Lecture at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2024, in Alumni Hall.

The lecture, titled "When God Does a New Thing," is free and open to the public. It will also be livestreamed via www.facebook.com/DubuqueSeminary.

Cannon is a lifelong Presbyterian, long active in the national Church. He previously served more than 30 years as pastor of C.N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church, a thriving congregation in Charlotte, North Carolina, and one of the largest Black congregations in the PC(USA). The congregation nearly tripled in size during Cannon's service and engaged in extensive community-based ministry and bridge-building.

Currently, Cannon leads and directs the Board of Pensions' dues incentive programs, exploring solutions that will break new grounds in support of small church and nontraditional ministries. He also manages the Board of Pensions' relationships with the National Black Presbyterian Caucus, National Caucus of Korean Presbyterian Churches, and Hispanic/Latinx National Presbyterian Caucus.

The Woods Lecture will include two additional events on August 6: A lunch interview with Cannon, titled "Innovation Snapshots Across the Church," at noon in Blades Chapel inside Blades Hall, as well as a roundtable workshop with Cannon, titled "New Initiatives for Small and Rural Churches," at 2:00 p.m. in the Couchman Conference Room inside the Charles C. Myers Library. These events require advanced registration. Please register by Thursday, August 1, 2024, at bit.ly/2024UDTSAugustEvents.

Established in 1987, the John P. Woods Distinguished Lectureship in Religion and Culture seeks to bring to campus a person who is able to speak concerning the links between culture and religion.
