Is Marching Band an academic course?
Yes, Marching Band is an academic course. All University of Dubuque students who join the band must enroll in MUSC: 210-03. One credit hour is awarded for participation.
 

What is the time commitment?
All members attend a one-week band camp before the start of fall semester. Preseason camp consists of full-day rehearsals for the length of the camp. During fall semester, the Marching Spartans rehearse two days a week: Mondays 4:00-6:00 p.m. and Wednesdays 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Chalmers Field and at Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC). Rehearsals are scheduled at a time of day when few classes meet. The Marching Spartans perform at all home football games (most are on Saturdays) and other special events on campus. Before select football games, the band gathers for a rehearsal/warmup on the field.
 

What is the attendance policy?
Marching band is a credit-bearing semester-long course. Attendance at band camp, all home football games, all special event appearances, and bi-weekly rehearsals until the end of the season is required.

What is the cost to participate?
There is no cost to participate in marching band. The University of Dubuque provides members with a uniform, music, and an instrument (if applicable). There are no charges associated with the use of university instruments, uniforms, or music.

Do I have to audition?
All University of Dubuque students are welcome to join the Marching Spartans! No audition is required. Joining marching band is a great way for UD students to keep music in their lives. Some of our member have never marched before because their high school band did not have a marching band. Our band faculty is great at teaching marching basics! All are welcome!

Do I have to major in music to join the band?
The Marching Spartans is a welcoming environment for all students, regardless of major. Members represent all academic disciplines on campus, with aviation representing a large contingent of the membership.
 

Can I join the Marching Spartans if I am not a student at University of Dubuque?
Yes, students who attend Northeast Iowa Community College, Emmaus Bible College, or other local colleges or high schools may be eligible to participate in the UD Marching Spartans. Contact Evan Glickman for more information.

What if I do not own an instrument?
If you do not own an instrument, the University of Dubuque Department of Fine and Performing Arts has instruments available for our members to borrow at no charge.

Do members of the Marching Spartans receive scholarships?
Being a member of the Marching Spartans is an exciting opportunity to continue playing and performing in college, but it is also a great way to earn a scholarship! The University of Dubuque Marching Band recognizes the talents and contributions of its student musicians and offers scholarships in every section. Scholarships are renewable for a period of up to four years and available to both music and non-music majors.

I'm a second, third, or fourth-year student at University of Dubuque, but have not participated in the University of Dubuque Marching Band. I was in my high school band; may I join the Marching Spartans?
