Women's Golf Ready For A-R-C Championships

AMES, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s golf team takes their talents to Ames, Iowa this weekend for the 2019 American Rivers Conference Championships at the Ames Country Club on Saturday, Oct. 5th through Monday, Oct. 7th.

The Spartans are coming off a team championship at the Knox Invitational on September 21st after the team battled the rain and posted a score of 325 (+33) to win by three strokes at the rain shortened event. Madison Bowers took home second place among all individuals with a round of 77 (+5).

Junior Daniela Miranda holds the best round average of all individuals in the American Rivers Conference with an average of 76.8. Madison Bowers (6th), Megan Gille (12th), Sydney Killeen (13th) and Madeline Sturm (14th) join Miranda in the top-15 individual scores.

Heading into the 2019 championships, the Spartans sit with the top team score in the conference with an average of 325.4. Wartburg trails UD by just one stroke after posting an average of 326.6 after eight rounds. Luther (330.4) hangs onto third place, sitting four strokes behind Wartburg to round out the top-three. The defending champions, Central Dutch, have scored an average of 334.1 through six rounds to set them in fourth.

“I am looking forward to the American Rivers Conference Tournament at Ames Country Club and our ladies have had a nice season thus far with two tournament wins”, said Director of Golf Dustin Bierman. “We still need to clean up a few things around the greens and to limit the big numbers a bit better. It should be fun and exciting tournament and we are looking forward to competing over the three days.” 

This year, the conference has changed the event from a four round, two weekend event, to three rounds over the same weekend to determine the conference champion. In 2018, the Spartans finished tied with the best score, but fell in a playoff to Central to just miss the conference’s NCAA Tournament automatic bid.

Play will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m., with the five Spartans teeing off from in the final pairings from 11:30 a.m. to 12:06 p.m..
