Women’s Basketball Upends NWU 73-69

LINCOLN, Neb. - The UD women's basketball team picked up their second American Rivers Conference victory on Saturday with a thrilling 73-69 victory at Nebraska Wesleyan. 

The Spartans got off to a slow start as Nebraska Wesleyan raced out to a 10 point lead late in the first quarter. UD got the NWU lead all the way down to one point at the 4:09 mark of the second quarter but still trailed by five at halftime. 

UD still trailed heading into the fourth quarter and finally broke through with 4:59 remaining in the fourth quarter after a Josie Thomas steal and layup for UD's first lead of the day at 60-59. After the Thomas layup, the UD lead did not last long, as NWU quickly regained the lead and took it a five point lead with 3:45 remaining. The Spartans clawed back and eventually regained the lead with 1:52 left after an Allie Bailey layup and UD would never lose the lead again. Up 71-69 as time was winding down, Bailey blocked a NWU shot with seven seconds left to seal the vitory.

Four of five Spartans starters reached double fogires against the Prairie Wolves, led by Alli Baliey with 18 points. Lauren Griffith and Tabria Thomas each dropped 12 points, while Miah Smith scored 10 points of her own while also grabbing 14 rebounds for a double-double. 

The Spartans travel to Pella, Iowa on Wednesday, Feb. 5th to take on Central College at 5:30 p.m.
