Women's Basketball Falls Victim to Luther, 83-67

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team got a career scoring effort from Tabria Thomas but it was not enough as the Spartans fell victim to the Luther College Norse, 83-67.

The game got off to a frantic start with both teams pressing and trading leads five times in the opening quarter before the Norse finished the first on a 7-2 run to take a 17-12 lead into the second quarter. The Spartans got off to a hot start in the second quarter, scoring eight of the first 10 points to grab the lead at 21-20 with 7:10 before halftime.

The teams stayed within four points over the next four minutes, before the Norse hit three, three pointers in a row to grow a nine-point lead. However, the Spartans held the Norse scoreless over the final two minutes of the half to trail by just six points at halftime at 36-30. Tabria Thomas led the charge for the Spartans in the first half, scoring 12 of her 13 first half points in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, there was nothing the Spartans could do to control Luther’s onslaught, as the Norse drilled five, three pointers in the quarter from all ranges on their way to outscoring the Spartans in the third, 31-17. Trailing 67-47 entering the fourth the Spartans put out Luther’s hot shooting, limiting the Norse to just two points over the first five minutes of the quarter to get back within 12 points at 69-57 with 5:04 to play. The Spartan run came to an end and they could only get as close as 11 points for the remainder of the contest.

Tabria Thomas had a career night, posting 22 points and six rebounds. Her previous career-high in points was 21 against Loras on Jan. 18. Kennedy Litvinoff was the only other Spartan to reach double figures, scoring 12 of her own. Morgan Meerstein was dishing out assists all over the place, registering a career-high eight assists.

The Spartans hit the road for the final time this season on Wednesday, Feb. 19th, traveling to Coe College for a 5:30 tip.
