Women's Basketball Downed by Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team closed the road portion of their schedule with a 71-57 loss at Coe College on Wednesday.

The Spartans offense came out of the gate cold, making one field goal over the first 6:30, but luckily for them, their defense stepped up and limited the Kohawks to just three field goals of their own over that timespan to only trail 9-4. UD would hit make three of the final four field goals for the quarter, capped by a Kennedy Litvinoff jumper from the top of the key as time expired, to trail 12-10 after one quarter of play.

The Kohawks would build a seven-point lead at multiple points in the second quarter, however, the Spartans scored six of the final eight points and this time it was Jaden Kelley’s turn to drill a buzzer beater, sending UD into half down three at 29-26.

The Kohawks returned the favor with a buzzer beater of their own to end the third quarter, outscoring the Spartans 23-10 in the quarter to push the UD deficit to 16 heading into the final frame. After Coe hit 72.7% of their shots in the third quarter, UD limited the Kohawks to just 30.8% shooting from the field in the final quarter to outscore the Kohawks 21-19 in the fourth.

The UD bench outscored the Coe bench, 24-19 as Litvinoff came off the bench to tally 14 points. Miah Smith would lead the Spartans in scoring against the Kohawks, finishing with 15 points on an efficient 5-8 shooting from the field. Smith also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. The Spartans also controlled the paint over the Kohawks, outscoring Coe 26-24 in the paint.

The Spartans close out the 2019-20 season on Saturday when the Wartburg Knights come to Dubuque for a 2 p.m. tipoff. Josie Thomas is the lone senior for the Spartan women and will be honored after the game.
