DUBUQUE, Iowa - A former NCAA Division III national champion and Division I assistant, Nate Hansen joins the University of Dubuque as an assistant coach for head coach Jon McGovern. Hansen spent seven seasons as the head wrestling coach at Simpson College in Indianola (2012-2019).

"I am excited to welcome Nate to our staff," commented McGovern. "I am confident his coaching experience and ability to connect with our student-athletes will help lead our team to new heights. As a former NCAA champion, he will be a great asset in training with our lighter weights and coordinating our strength and conditioning program."

In 2014-15, Hansen led Simpson to its best dual record in nine seasons and the most dual wins by the program since 2005-06. He also coached two nationally-ranked wrestlers in Jonathan Melton and Jacob Mize and helped Melton earn all-Iowa Conference honors at the NCAA Central Regional Championships. Hansen coached five all-conference wrestlers and five academic all-conference honorees. He also coached at South Dakota State University, where he spent five seasons as an assistant coach for the Jackrabbits.

A native of Gregory, South Dakota, Hansen was a two-time NCAA Division III All-American and the 2007 national champion at 125 lbs. for the Luther College Norse. He also won the Iowa Conference Championship at 125 lbs. in 2007 and was a two-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American. In high school, Hansen was a three-time state champion.

Hansen graduated from Luther in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education before earning a master’s degree from South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. in 2009.
