DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team snapped a three game losing streak with an 88-49 blowout win over the Rockford Regents.

Defense was the story of the game early on, as the two teams combined for just 10 points in the opening six minutes, but it was the Spartans who had scored eight of those 10 points.  The low scoring quarter continued for the whole opening 10 minutes as the Spartans held a 16-13 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was the Spartans most dominant quarter of the young season. UD scored the 15 points of the quarter to blow their lead wide open to 34-15. In all, the Spartans would outscore the Regents 35-6 in the quarter to take a 51-19 lead into halftime.

The Spartans scored the first basket of the game seven seconds in and after scoring three of the four first shots of the second half, the Spartans would lead by 31 or more points for the remaining 18:24, building a lead as large as 44 points with 3:32 left in the third quarter.

As expected, it was a total team effort with eight Spartans scoring five points or more, led by Lauren Griffith with 15 points out the bench. Abigail Zurcher added 13, while Kelssie Kraable also came off the bench to tack on a career-high 10 points of her own. UD assisted on 21 of their 33 field goal makes, with Morgan Meerstein and Tabria Thomas each dishing out four to lead the way.

The Spartan women head on a two game weekend road trip beginning with a matinee contest at UW-Stout at 10:30 a.m. on Friday afternoon.
