CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men's basketball team fell behind early and could never recover, falling to the Coe College Kohawks, 81-72.

It was the Kohawks who came out as the aggressor to open up Wednesday night’s conference matchup as Coe raced out to a 28-15 lead through the opening 12:30. At that point, the Spartans made their first run of the game as Avery Butler scored the next five points as UD went on an 11-0 over the next 2:10 that was capped by a Peter Ragen three-pointer to pull the Spartans within two with 5:12 to play before half.

However, over the following two minutes, Coe answered with a 10-0 run of their own and an 18-4 run in all to push the Spartans to their biggest deficit of the first half at 16 points. Carter Stevens sent UD into the locker room on a high note as he drilled a corner three with the first half clock winding down to send it into halftime, 46-33 in favor of Coe.

For the first 13 minutes, the Spartans could not get any closer than 12 points as the Kohawks had an answer for everything UD threw at them. Beginning at the 8:45 mark the Spartans got a Daugherty layup and back-to-back three’s from Ragen and Burger to get within nine and force a Coe timeout. Out of the timeout UD earned a stop and got an Avery Butler layup on the other end to pull even closer at 66-59 with 6:07 remaining, before a Coe three ended the UD run.

After pulling back within eight points with 5:05 remaining, the Kohawks would quickly push it back up to 13 and got as big as a 15-point deficit with 2:41 remaining to put the game out of reach for the Spartans.

Three different Spartans finished in double figures, led by Mitch Burger with 14 points. Avery Butler and Peter Ragen were not far behind Burger with 13 and 12 points of their own, respectively. Burger would also lead the Spartans in rebounding with eight.

The Spartans close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Wartburg College at 4 p.m. inside the Stoltz Sports Center.
