Football Lead #15-ranked Knights Early on the Road

WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team started Saturday's game with energy and jumped out to a first quarter lead 17-0 before the #15-ranked Wartburg Knights rallied back in the final three quarters out scoring the Spartans 42-8 to capture the American Rivers Conference match-up 42-25.

UD's Andy Vujnovich scored the first points off a 24 yard field goal with 4:57 left in the first quarter. Freshman Kordell Stillmunkes just over a minute later would score off a 36 yard run in a two play drive that started on Wartburg's 36 yard line. UD would hold the hosts Knights to a three and out and would take the ball after a punt on UD's 21 yard line. A pass for a loss of a yard left the ball at UD's 20 yard line. Stillmunkes would outrun the defense for a 80 yard touchdown with 1:33 left of the opening quarter of action leading Wartburg 17-0. UD would hold the halftime lead 17-14.

The second half was all Knights as they scored a pair of touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters while holding the Spartans to one more score on a Sean Duffy pass to Emanuel Jenkins form 16 yards out. A.J. Hunter would collect the two point conversion on a pass from Duffy with 8:56 left in the final quarter. UD finished the day with 210 yards rushing and 146 yards through the air. The Spartan defense held the Knights to 97 yards rushing and 233 yards through the air.

Stillmunkes led all rushers with 17 carries for 175 yards for an average of 10.3 yards a carry. Dwayne Allen Jr. was held to five carries for 19 yards. Duffy completed 14-28 passes whil tossing two interceptions. His favorite target was Jenkins who caught four passes for 60 yards. Kody Reimer grabbed four catches for 53 yards. Defensively UD was led by Chad Marsh and Adam Steingraeber who both finished with eight tackles each.

The Spartans fall to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the A-R-C) will host the Coe College Kohawks (3-1 overall, 2-0 in A-R-C) on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. on Chalmers Field in Dubuque.
