Cross Country Ends 2019 season at NCAA Central Regional

WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque cross country teams wrapped up the 2019 season on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Central Regional Championships. The Spartan men closed the season with a 16th place finish, while the women finished 25th.
Sophmore Mark Biechler powered through for the Spartans, being the first Spartan to cross the finish line in a time of 26:29.66 for 37th place. Biechler cut more than two minutes off his 8k time from his finish two weeks ago at the American Rivers Conference Championships. In all, the Spartan men had four finishers in the top 100 runners. Behind Biechler came Tyler Cernohous in 83rd. Cernous, a sophomore out of River Falls, Wis., ended his sophomore season with a time of 27:28.21. Joseph Tobin closed out his cross country career with a 91st place finish after running a time of 27:39.68. Jacob Heitter rounded out the top four runners for the Spartans, finishing in 27:46.14 and seven spots behind Tobin in 98th. As a team, the men finished 16th out of 28 teams.
In her final collegiate meet, Isabella Mazzanti paced the Spartan women with a time of 25:51.21 for a 122nd place finish. Sophomore Lucy Syverson was not far behind, coming in 130th after running the 6,000 meters in 25:59.8. The Spartan women continued to roll in near each other, with freshman Stacey Kloft crossing the finish line in 26:05.20. Mackenzie Helgemoe and Bailey Hammerand rounded out the top five UD runners with marks of 27:02.57 and 27:30.59, respectively. As a team, UD finished in 25th place in the NCAA Central Region.
