Baseball Splits on Day Two of Derby City Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University battled stiff competition on opening weekend in Louisville, Ky., where they split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans fell in the opener to Aurora 7-6, before taking down Ohio Northern 6-4.

How It Happened
-For the second straight game, the opposition hopped out to an early lead on the Spartans as Aurora plated two in the bottom of the first. However, the Spartans got one of those runs back in the top of half the next inning with a Mitchell Pomeroy single to center.
-After Aurora took a 3-1 lead after three innings, the Spartans put together a two-out rally in the fourth and Max Snowden singled home a run before JJ Valencia was hit by a pitch to bring home another, but the Spartans would leave the bases juiced.
-Aurora tacked on one in the bottom of the fourth, two more in the fifth and one in the seventh to put the Spartans in a 7-3.
-The Spartans would not go down without a fight, a Jordan Goldstein two-run home run in the top of the eighth pulled UD within one. In the ninth, Kellen Mitchell drove home a run by way of the sacrifice fly to make it 7-6, but UD would leave the tying run stranded and fell 7-6.

How It Happened
-The Spartans once again fell behind early, spotting Ohio Northern the first three runs of the game over the first two innings.
-UD created their first rally in the bottom of the third with the first three guys reaching base. Ohio Northern helped the Spartans with an error when Kellen Mitchell rolled over to the second baseman, who attempted to turn a double play, however the ball went into left field allowing two Spartans to cross home. Justin Jensen capped the three run innings with a single to left center and suddenly it was a 3-3 ballgame.
-Dubuque took their first lead of the weekend when Mitchell singled up the middle in the bottom of the fourth to bring home Nick Casarietti
-Ohio Northern evened it at 4-4 in the top of the seventh but the Spartans did not wait long to respond. Mitchell walked to begin the innings, before Kvenvold delivered with a double down the left field line to put two runners in scoring position. Pomeroy once again came through, singling through the right side with two outs to score both runners, making it 6-4.
-Derek Hardin came in and slammed the door for UD, allowing just one hit over the final two innings to make it drama free, giving the Spartans their first victory of the 2020 campaign.
