Feb 13, 2019

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque wrestling team wrapped up the dual portion of their season with a quick victory over the Simpson on Wednesday night, downing the Storm 43-6.

The match got off to an exciting start at 125 between UD’s Aaron Black and Simpson’s Dylan McChesney. Black led for a majority of the match and still maintained control as it was tied at 4-4 in the third period as Black owned riding time over McChesney. However, McChesney turned Black on his back in the final seconds to get back points for the last second win over Black. Richard Diaz picked up the first UD win of the night at 133 when he got a late escape out of Jason Padilla’s grab to take the match, 3-2.

On senior night, the lone Spartan senior made quick work over his opponent, pinning Jacob Irwin in 3:28 to put the Spartans ahead 9-3 in team points. After Isaiah Williams earned a dominating 10-2 major decision over Jakob Slavin at 141, the Storm forfeited the next five matches to boost the UD lead to 43-3. To close out the match of the night at 285, Danny Petrela and Simpson’s Sam Mathis battled until the end, but Mathis got an escape in the third to tie the match at 1-1 and eventually won out with a riding time advantage.
