National Championships Ahead For Track and Field

GENEVA, Ohio – The University of Dubuque track and field teams head to the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend with eight individuals and two relays competing. Action at the championships run from Thursday, May 23rd through Saturday May, 25th.

The 2019 outdoor championships are being held at the SPIRE Institute with the top 20 men in each event qualifying and the top 22 on the women’s side.

Blaze Murfin will wrap up his historic career, competing in the shot, discus and hammer throw. Murfin is already three time, outdoor All-American, and will look to defend his national championship in the shot put. He comes into the 2019 championships ranked in the top 10 in all three events, sitting in second in the shot put, fourth in the discus and ninth in the hammer.

Murfin will be joined in the men’s field events by Kortez Pickett who took advantage of the Last Chance Invites and jumped his way into the championships with a jump of 14.49m/47-6.5 at the Augustana Twilight to come in as the 20th seed. Colfay Pointer heads into the championships at the 14th seed in the 400m dash and is also a leg of the qualifying and 16th 4x400 relay team.

The UD women will be taking over the throwing rings at the championships, with at least two qualifiers in the shot put, discus and hammer. Kelsey Betthauser (Discus and Hammer), Kayla Slowick (Discus and Shot) and Rebecca Burmahl (Hammer and Discus) will all compete in two different events. In the discus, Betthauser and Burmahl both come in ranked in the top 10. Betthauser is sitting in third with a mark of 48.24m/158-3 and Burmahl is in eighth at 46.11/151-3, both of their top marks came at the 2019 Viking Classic. Slowick pushed her way into the discus championships, with a toss of 44.34m/145-6 at the UW-LaCrosse Last Chance Qualifier.

In the hammer, it is Burmahl in title contention as her best throw of 56.79m/186-4, has her as the two seed behind Aurora’s Jocelyn Ocon. Betthauser comes in as the 19th seed (52.32m). For the shot put, Caroline Ferguson will compete in her lone event of the weekend as she is already on the edge of All-American status, sitting in 10th coming into the meet at 14.16m/46-5.5. Kayla Slowick grabbed one of the second to last spot in the shot put with a top throw of 13.52m/44-4.25.

On the track for the women, Alison Beeman will have a busy weekend competing in the 100m dash where she comes in as the third seed, the 200m dash as the 13 seed and the 4x100 relay. The 4x100 relay team posted their top time of the season at the Augustana Last Chance Qualifier of 47.11 to vault up to the fourth seed.
