Box Score

PELLA, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team ran into a buzz saw on Friday afternoon, dropping the first game of the three game set against Central, 10-0 in eight innings.

How It Happened
-The Spartans threatened in the first but a double play with runners on the corners ended the inning. Central took advantage of their opportunity in the bottom of the first for the early 1-0 lead.
-UD would put runners on in each the second, fourth and fifth innings but UD left a combined four runners stranded as the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Dutch until Central scored three runs on two hits in the bottom half of the fifth to expand their lead to 4-0.
-The Spartans looked to respond in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs but the Dutch were able to escape the jam with a fielder’s choice put-out.
-Central would bat around in the bottom of the sixth, pushing their lead to 8-0.
-The trend of stranding runners continued for the Spartans in the seventh and eighth innings, leaving five more runners on base without scoring, meanwhile the Dutch would score one more in the seventh and eighth to put the 10 run rule into effect.
