Baseball Gets Much Needed Sweep Over Simpson

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team used dominating performances on the mound sweep the Simpson College Storm on Saturday afternoon by scores of 6-0 and 3-1, to complete the weekend series sweep of the Storm.

How it Happened
-The Spartans carried the momentum over from their win on Friday over the Storm by jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Thomas Kempf got the scoring started with an RBI double to left field and came around to score on a Jarad Clevenger single to left center
-After the two first inning runs, the game turned into a pitcher’s duel for the next four innings until the Spartans struck again in the sixth without the ball leaving the infield. Daulton Kvenvold reached on an infield single to the shortstop. He then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved up to third on a wild pitch. UD then went with the squeeze play as Jordan Goldstein got the bunt down to score Kvenvold and make it 3-0.
-UD opened the flood gates in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs on just one hit to push the lead to 6-0, where UD starter Jordan Nelson would have no problem keeping it as he went the distance for the complete game shutout.

How it Happened
-Just like in game one, the Spartans got on the board first in the nightcap with a first inning run. Once again, it was Thomas Kempf who delivered a RBI single to right field to score JJ Valenica.
-Josh Pawlowski singled to left center with one out in the bottom of the second to spark a UD rally. Jack Lasswell followed with a walk and JJ Valenica singled up the middle to bring home the Spartans second run of the game. Kempf, was once again the middle of a rally, this time coming up with a single to centerfield to score Valencia and make it 3-0 in favor of the Spartans.
-It gave Kempf his fourth RBI of the day and is now tied for the school record with 101 career RBI.
-Neither team would score again until Simpson pushed across their first run of the game in the top of the seventh inning to make it 3-1.
-Nathan Schneiderman relieved Nick Sewruk to begin the eighth inning and closed out the game for the Spartans, stranding the tying run on first base in the ninth inning.
