Spartans Outlast Storm

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s basketball team went into Indianola and came out with a win over Simpson, defeating the Simpson College Storm 80-76.

UD had a tough time slowing Simpson in the opening 10 minutes of action, falling behind by as many as 15 points with 11:15 remaining in the first half. The Spartans began to chip away at the deficit, sparked by an offensive possession in which the Spartans grabbed five offensive rebounds and ended with a TJ Lake jumper. UD ended the half on a 12-3 run to trail 36-35 at halftime.

With 3:49 remaining in the game and the score tied at 67-67, TJ Lake drilled one of his five three pointers to put the Spartans ahead 70-67. On the following possession, Simpson thought they had an open layup but Jamaree Atwater came up with a block that led to another TJ Lake three pointer and push the UD lead to 73-67 with 3:28 left. UD closed out the game at the free throw line, making four down the stretch to seal the game.

TJ Lake played all 40 minutes, recording a game-high 27 points on 10-21 shooting and five three pointers. Jamaree Atwater did a little bit of everything on Wednesday night, scoring 17 points, dishing out four assists and grabbing seven rebounds. Guard Marcus McDaniel lead the Spartans on the galss with eight rebounds.

Despite being outshot 41.3% to 45.6%, the Spartans made up for it on the offensive glass, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds to Simpson’s six, leading to a 17-3 UD advantage in second chance points.

The Spartans are back in action on Saturday when they take on Wartburg in Waverly at 4:00 p.m.
