Errors Hinder Spartans in Pair of Losses
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Spartan centerfielder Daniel Casanova tripled and homered in the University of Dubuque baseball team's shootout loss to University of Minnesota-Morris, 13-10, as he and the rest of the Spartans were held to three hits in 6-3 setback to McDaniel College on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans couldn't overcome nine errors that led to eight unearned runs combined in both games.

UM-Morris
The Spartans surrendered 19 hits in 42 at-bats to UM-Morris (4-5) as the Cougars scored in five of the first six innings aided by a plethora of errors.

Casanova's first home run of the season countered a Cougar attack that posted two runs in the top of the first. UD trailed 3-2 through the first two innings until the Cougars plated seven unanswered runs over innings four through six. Seven errors doomed the Spartans as six of UM-Morris' first 10 runs were unearned.

UD starter Doug Van Dyke (1-1) gave up six hits, five runs (one earned), and three walks in 3.0 innings of work.

Casanova led a productive day at the dish as the Spartans (3-3) collected 14 hits total. The starting centerfielder finished 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI while PH/LF Trace Florek and 2B Will Fogel each totaled two hits and two runs a piece. LF/RF Jacob Evans paced the Spartans with three hits and SS Ryan Karrick added a team-high three RBIs.

The Cougars' C Chandler Erickson nabbed three hits, one run, and four RBIs to lead UM-Morris.

McDaniel
It wasn't until the sixth inning that UD scored the game's first run against McDaniel (3-1) as a pitcher's dual occupied the previous five innings.

The Spartans 2-0 lead after the top of the sixth didn't hold as McDaniel took advantage of two more Spartan errors to snag the 3-2 advantage. UD failed to score in the top of the seventh as McDaniel pulled away with three more runs at the bottom of the inning.

UD starter Trent Van Egtern (0-1) gave up four hits, three runs (one earned), while striking out five in 5.2 innings on the bump.

Dalton Garst collected one hit and two RBIs while Will Fogel added two hits and one RBI as the pair claimed all three Spartan hits.

The Spartans (3-3) have seen defeat in their last three games after starting out the season with a three-game sweep of Elmhurst on the road. It was the first-ever meeting for UD against both McDaniel and UM-Morris.

UD will attempt to right the ship against Lasell College (Mass.) on Monday, March 16 at 9:00 a.m. in their fourth game of their Spring Break series.
