Men's Soccer Quiet the Fighting Scots 4-0

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team dominated the contest on Wednesday evening on Oyen Field and finished with the shutout en route to a 4-0 victory over the Monmouth College Fighting Scots.

The Spartans scored the first goal at the 23 minute mark of the first period by Brandon Wiley off an assist by Chris Cleope. Wiley celebrated with a sideline flip in front of the Spartan fans in attendance. UD entered the halftime break 1-0. Coach Brad Johnson's halftime speech inspired the Spartans and they scored three goal in the first 25 minutes of the final half to extend their lead to 4-0. Billy Belmonte scored with a header off a free kick assisted by senior Will Hirsch at 51:49. Gonzalo Hernandez stuck it in from 10 yards out on the leftside at 62:46 and Jack Stefanski scored off an assist from Cleope in the middle of the box at 70:22.

UD's domination is eveident in the 29-8 shots in the contest. and season high 19 shots on goal. The visiting Fighting Scots led in fouls after being whistled for 16 as UD had just five fouls. The Spartans finished with 11 corner kicks and kept Monmouth's keeper busy all night long as he finished with 14 saves.

The Spartans Riley Jensen earned the shutout after stopping all four Fighting Scots shots on goal. The Spartans open Iowa Conference play on Saturday in Storm Lake against the Buena Vista University Beavers (4-3-1) at 7:00 p.m.
