Department of Natural and Applied Sciences to Host Seminar Series

The Department of Natural and Applied Science will host a Fall Seminar Series on the University of Dubuque campus.
“Consistent with our commitment to promoting young women in their pursuit of science careers – as evidenced by our annual Women in Science Grant Program – we are highlighting the science accomplishments of women during the fall semester. We are also to highlight three of our own graduates as speakers in this series,” stated Dr. Gerald Zuercher, head of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences and associate professor of vertebrate ecology. “Our first speaker, Dr. Rita Mehta, has been profiled in National Geographic Magazine for her research, and is an excellent, exciting lecturer.”
The series offers the community an opportunity to regularly engage with science. Seminars celebrate the ever-increasing knowledge base created through the sciences. Each seminar in the fall series will be held in Room 105 of the University Science Center. Details are as follows:

Speaker: Frances Owen, C’09 – Fort Hays State University (Kansas)
Title: Effect of grain, region, and human influence on higher taxonomic surrogacy
Friday, December 12 – 3:30 p.m.
Speaker: BreAnn Nesteby, C’12 – Western Illinois University
Title: Battle against the elements: understanding the impact of floods, droughts, and restoration efforts on a population of eastern prairie fringed orchids
