Spartans Outdueled by UW-Superior in Hotly Contested Match

Aug 30, 2014

ELMHURST, Ill. – It was a standoff from the outset but UW-Superior ultimately pulled away from the University of Dubuque men’s soccer team, 2-1, in the second half of a competitive bout.

On the heels of a scoreless first half, freshman Leo Lenth emerged as a scoring threat for the Spartans after an unassisted game-tying goal in the 64th minute put UD on the board. UW-Superior Brian Grand’s counter in the 83rd minute proved to be the nail in the coffin as the Yellowjackets managed to hang on.

It was Lenth’s first goal of his career as he also led the team with five shots, including two on goal, while high volume shooter Gonzalo Hernandez posted four shots with three on goal. UW-Superior’s varied attack featured nine players attempting a shot that included five shots on goal.

Their efforts were not lost in a scrappy match that featured four cards and an oh-so-close shot counter of 16-14 won by the Spartans.

The Spartans continue on their challenging non-conference slate as they face Grinnell on the road next Wednesday, September 3rd.
