Spartans Volleyball Fall in Season Openers

Aug 29, 2014

WINONA, Minn. – University of Dubuque volleyball team dropped their opening pair of games at the Sugar Loaf Classic to Saint Mary’s and St. Catherine by the scores of 3-0 and 3-1, respectively.

Saint Mary’s (1-0) seemed to have the Spartans (0-2) number from the get-go as they bolted out to a 25-18 opening set victory. Klaudie Basierak did her best to stymie the attack with a team-high 41 attacks but it wasn’t enough as the Spartans fell 25-14, 25-18 in the final two sets. Hannah Zieser finished with a game-high 23 assists.

It was a different story in game two for the Spartans as they jumped out to an early lead against St. Catherine (2-0), but ultimately fell by the scores of 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, and 25-17. They would take set one thanks to an efficient .308 attack percentage which slowly declined as the match wore on. Despite this setback the Spartans remained competitive thanks to the steady defensive presence of Olivia Larson (game-high 27 digs), and the tandem of Zieser (32 assists) and Basierak (55 attacks). Karrah Davis, Amy Tranel, and Anna Runge also tallied six kills apiece.

The Spartans continue their opening weekend at the Sugar Loaf Classic, Saturday, August 30 against Gustavus Adolphus at noon followed by UW-La Crosse at 4:00 p.m.
