Women's Soccer Honored with NSCAA Team Ethics Award & IIAC Fair Play Award

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Soccer team has been awarded the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Ethics Award. The Spartans earned the Silver Award for receiving no red cards and no more than five yellow cards accumulated during the season. UD was also announced as the Iowa Conference (IIAC) Fair Play Award winner for the 2013 season along with Wartburg.
As a results of drawing only two yellow cards during the season, UD was one of 157 programs to earn the Silver Award. To earn the Silver Award, a team must accumulate no red cards and less than five yellow cards. A total of 25 teams were award the Gold Team Ethics Award for going the entire season without receiving a yellow or red card. 72 teams earned the Bronze Award for completing the year with no red cards and less than 10 yellow cautions.

The IIAC Fair Play Award recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game. The UD women did not receive a yellow or red card in conference play. Buena Vista was named the men's award winner.
The Spartans won a school record 16 games in 2013 and advanced to their second straight IIAC Tournament Championship Game. UD also set school records with 10 home wins, six consecutive wins, and fewest goals allowed in a season with 18. Dubuque led the IIAC in goals-against average (0.85) and fewest goals allowed (18). Head Coach Jason Berna was named IIAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time. In addition, three Spartans earned First Team All-IIAC, three were named to the Second Team, and one was Honorable Mention All-Conference. The UD Women's Soccer team also got it done in the classroom with 11 earning Academic All-Iowa Conference.
