DUBUQUE, Iowa - The number one doubles team of Matthew Sablay and Ranfer Hernandez collected the University of Dubuque men's tennis team lone win in a 8-1 defeat to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday morning. The Spartans also dropped a thrilling 5-hour match to Lawrence University, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon.
Match One
The Blugolds (8-3) won their sixth straight match that included a 9-0 victory over the Spartans rival, Loras, on Friday. The Spartans' (4-8) Hernandez and Sablay won 8-5 in their first match as a doubles team. Richard Rhinehart and Jordan Hamling dropped their number two doubles match by the same score of 8-5.
Rhinehart narrowly lost in a competitive number one singles bout 7-6, 6-4.
Match Two
UD's quest to split their third-straight triangular came up short after dropping their closest match of the year to Lawrence (4-3).
Both teams had suffered previous defeats to UW-Eau Claire, 8-1, earlier in the day.
UD suffered a trio of setbacks in their opening three doubles matches. Two sets of Spartans pushed Lawrence to their limit after Sablay and Hernandez were edged out, 8-6, in the number one slot and the number two doubles pair, Nikolay Gospodinov and Zebulon Hill, lost 9-7.
The Spartans (4-8) recovered after four victories, including two three-set wins, in singles spots two through five.
Freshman Jordan Hamling's victory in the five-spot upped his record to a team-best 8-4. The Forsyth, Mo. native is 7-4 as the number five player and 1-0 in the sixth slot.
The Spartans must wait until March 28 to host UW-La Crosse (7-2) at home.
