Spartans Shutout Carthage

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Soccer team came out on top in a match-up of regionally ranked teams on Tuesday afternoon.  The Spartans 1-0 win against Carthage College (11-3, 9th in Central Region) set a school record for home wins in a single season with eight victories. UD finished with a 22-14 advantage in shots. Dubuque, ranked 8th in the Central Region, improved to 12-4 on the season and 8-1 on Oyen Field. 

The Spartans and Carthage played a scoreless first half as the defenses set the pace early. UD escaped four Carthage shots from close range in the first five minutes before taking control of the remaining 40 minutes of the first half. 

Junior defender Kelsey Graefen (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) was the difference maker in the second half with a header in the 71st minute. After a Carthage foul, Lauren Waddell (Poplar Grove, Ill./Belvidere) sent the free kick to Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) in the box. Watkins tipped the pass to Graefen on the back side of the goal for the games only score. Graefen has scored on headers in each of the last two games. 

Tiffany Duncan (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) earned the shutout victory in goal with five saves. 

Katie Lynn (Fox River Grove, Ill./Barrington) came off the bench for a team high five shots with three shots on goal. Watkins, Megan Siepler (La Canada, Calif./La Canada), and Liz Frazier (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) all finished with four shots. 

UD held a 10-5 lead in shots on goal and 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. 

The victory over Carthage was the first for UD. The Spartans lost 1-0 in 2011 and 2012. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will host Buena Vista University (2-13-1, 0-5 in IIAC) on Saturday, October 26th at 4:00 pm. Following the game, seniors Caitlin Crane, Megan Strawn, and Alexandra Watkins will be recognized during Senior Day Activities.
