Spartans Lose in Second Overtime

DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Women’s Soccer team went head-to-head with one of the nation’s top teams on Saturday afternoon at Oyen Field. The Spartans took #14 Loras (8-2-1, 1-0-0) to double overtime before losing 3-2. As the rain picked up in the second half, UD turned up the aggression on the offensive end of the field leading to two goals. Dubuque is now 7-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Iowa Conference action.

The Spartans found themselves in a difficult situation in the first half with a stiff wind in their face forcing them the play a large portion of the period on the defensive end of the field. UD trailed 1-0 early after Loras scored on a free kick six minutes into the game. Dubuque held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks but a one goal deficit.

Senior Alexandra Watkins (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) tied the game early in the second half by converting on a penalty kick after Katie Lynn (Fox River Grove, Ill./Barrington) was tackled in the box on a UD corner kick. The goal by Watkins was her team high eighth of the year and tied the game at 1-1. Loras answered four minutes later to take a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute.

Dubuque would not trail for long as Liz Frazier (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) tied the game at the 70:59 mark on a free kick that went into the upper left corner of the goal. UD and Loras each registered seven shots in the period with the Spartans holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. 

The first overtime period would see both defenses step up with each team allowing only one shot on goal. Loras would win 0:31 seconds into the second overtime after a cross deflected off the outreached hands of goalkeeper Tiffany Duncan (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) and into a crowd of Duhawks. Duncan would finish with six saves in the game.

‌Megan Siepler (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) finished with a team high three shots. Lynn and Watkins each had two shots.
