Spartans Rally on Road

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The University of Dubuque football team dug themselves a giant hole to begin on Saturday night against the Stevens Point Pointers after turning the ball over in 3-4 of their first possessions in the game. The Spartans in a blink of an eye were down 0-21 to the host Pointers in the opening quarter of play. UD responded by holding the Pointers to just one touchdown in the final three quarters and outscored them 28-10. As time ran out, the Pointers captured the victory by a slim margin of 31-28 at home.

The tell of the tape was turnovers for the Spartans, UD turned the ball over four times in the loss. The host Pointers controlled total offense yards 418 to UD's 265 yards. In total possession time it also favored UWSP 36:32 to 23:28. The defense held the Spartand to a third conversion rate of 5-14 attempts while they controlled the game with 11-17 third down conversions. 

Kyle Acker was held to 34 yards rushing as quarterback Bryan Bradshaw finished the evning completing 22-41 passes and four touchdowns. Bradshaw's favorite recipient was Tyler Rutenbeck, who grabbed seven for 71 yards and three TD's. Chris Bagley and Sean Anderson both caught four passes as Lee Jones finished with three.

Blaine Snitker led the defensive effort with 11 tackles inlcuding nine for solos. Vincent Whipple had 10 tackles and two pass beak-ups and teammate Oscar White finished with nine tackles and an interception return of 14 yards.

The Spartans will enjoy a week off for Sept. 28 before starting the Iowa Conference season at home against the Central College Dutch on Oct. 5 with kick-off slated for 1:00 p.m.
