Spartans Sweep Duhawks

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team accomplished what hasn't been done since 1998, a sweep of across town rival the Loras Duhawks. 

The Spartans playing at Dubuque Girls Independent League Field opened the series with a 6-3 victory over the Duhawks. UD jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, before the Duhawks rallied to take the lead 3-2 in the 2nd inning. UD tied the game in the bottom of the third, before capturing the game by adding a pair of runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth inning to lead 6-3. Emily Michaels captured the victory on the mound after she went the complete seven innings allowing three earned runs while striking out six batters.

UD's Susie Danielewski had the only double in the victory and finished a perfect 4-4 at the plate and earned two RBI's. Her single in the third innings set a new school record for career hits. 

The Spartans stranded 10 runners on base, #2 in the line-up, Jen Pohlman was left on base five times in the opener. UD turned the lone double play in the game. 

In the second game, the Spartans scored first by adding two runs in the third before the Duhawks knotted the game after they scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings. The bottom of the fifth, the Spartans opened up the scoring gates and spotted the Duhawks with nine runs to end the night early after five innings. UD led by seven runs with 1 out and a runner on base, before Amber Meyer connected for a two run homerun over dead center field to end the game early. It was Meyer's fourth of the season for the Spartans leading hitter who has a batting average of .549 and a slugging percentage of .863. She has seven stolen bases and has yet to make an error in 54 chances.

Shawna Dole and Meggie Schmidt finished with doubles in the win. UD finished with 11 runs on 11 hits and committed no errors. UD left six runners on base.

The University of Dubuque and Loras College softball teams joined the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and the American Cancer Society in the effort to StrikeOut Cancer on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. The NFCA has teamed with the American Cancer Society raising tens of thousands of dollars to support cancer awareness and research over the past 10 years. On Wednesday, the two teams raised over $550 in donations and raffles throughout the doubleheader. 

Thursday, April 4, the Spartans will host the UW-La Crosse Eagles for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. at Dubuque Girls Independent League Field in Dubuque.
