Spartans Defeat Coe

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women’s Basketball team opened and closed the first half on 12-0 runs to aid in the Spartans 80-63 victory over Coe College (11-10, 4-6). UD held the Kohawks scoreless for the first 5:57 and jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the process. Senior Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) passed 1,500 career points with her first basket of the game. Dubuque is now 15-6 overall and 5-5 in the Iowa Conference.

Whiting finished the game with 31 points on 10-13 shooting from the field and 10-11 from the free throw line. The Iowa Conferences leading scorer at 21.9 points per game, Whiting has now scored 20+ points in 11 consecutive games and 15 or more in 15 straight games. She also pulled down four rebounds and dished out three assists.

After Coe slowly chipped away at the Spartans lead and took a 27-26 lead with 3:07 left in the first half, UD would end the half with a 12-0 run. Dubuque began the run with a Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) jumper to take the lead followed by a Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) free throw. Whiting made back-to-back jumpers followed by an Ashley Barwick (Appleton, Wis./Xavier) jumper of her own.  A Coe turnover gave UD one last chance before the half and Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) made the most of it with a deep three-pointer at the buzzer.

Schmidt continued her sharp shooting from the outside with two three-pointers in the contest as she finished with 13 points. Barwick and Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) each scored 10 points. Barwick also pulled down a team high eight rebounds.

The Spartans largest lead of the game came with 50 seconds left in the game as UD iced the game from the free throw line. Dubuque went ahead 78-60 on a Whiting free throw. As the clock wound down, UD hit 11 straight free throws over the last 2:10. UD made a season high 28 free throws in the game.
