Spartans Win on Late Jumper

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team survived 11 lead changes and seven ties against Wartburg College (12-8, 5-4) on Thursday night inside Stoltz Sports Center to come away with a 49-48 victory. Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) hit a jumper with 2.1 seconds left in the game to give UD the victory. The Spartans improved to 14-6 overall and 4-5 in the Iowa Conference.

Whiting continued her outstanding season with another superb game on the offensive side of the court with 23 points. She has now scored 20 or more points in ten straight game and 15 or more in 14 straight. The senior guard also moved closer to another milestone as she improved her career points total to 1,499. Whiting now leads the IIAC in scoring at 21.5 points per game overall and 26.6 ppg in conference action.

Tied at 45-45 with 1:42 to go in the game after two Wartburg free throws, the Spartans answered with a jumper by Whiting with 1:16 left in the game. After exchanging stops, Wartburg raced down the court and hit a three-pointer on the fast break to go ahead 48-47 with 22 seconds left. Following a UD timeout, Whiting was able to get into the lane and hit a highly contested jumper with only two seconds remaining. The drama built over the next few minutes as the coaches called timeouts trying to set up a last second play. When Wartburg was able to inbound the ball, it was intercepted by the Spartans Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) as time ran out.

The Spartans forced 23 Wartburg turnovers which led to 14 UD steals. Fischer paced the Spartans with four steals. Alexis Lozano-Dobbs (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) and Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) each recorded three steals off the bench. Dubuque held Wartburg to 28.9% shooting from the field and 22.7% from three-point territory. Stephany Remakel(Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) finished with three blocks.

The largest UD lead of the night came at 36-28 with 12:15 left in the second half. A layup by Jena Darwin (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) closed out a 12-2 run that included six points from Whiting, and jumpers in the lane by Krystal Pritchett (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and Remakel.

Remakel and Whiting each finished with seven rebounds to lead the Spartans. Fischer grabbed six defensive rebounds.
