Spartans Ranked #3 by USTFCCCA

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Men's and Women's Track and Field teams each found themselves in the Top 5 of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Week #1 Central Region rankings that were released on Wednesday, January 23rd. The Spartan women are currently fifth with 146.05 team points. The UD men's team is third in the region with 317.32 team points and rank 31st in the national poll.

On the men's side, Spartan sprinters have accounted for 68.92 points in the 60m Dash. Phillip Jones (South Holland, Ill./Thornwood) leads the Central Region with his 7.01 second time scoring 22.93 points. Tyrone Galvin (Madison, Wis./Madison East) and Corey Broussard (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) are right behind Jones at 7.04 seconds (20.57 points) and 7.05 seconds (16.45 points) respectively. Andy Sierra (Fruitland, Iowa/Louisa-Muscatine) is the fourth scorer with a 7.21 second mark and 8.97 points. In the 60m Hurdles, Evan Zurbuchens time of 8.53 seconds accounts for 18.34 points and the third fastest time in the region.

In field events, UD has three scorers in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, and Pole Vault. Galvin's Long Jump of 23' 0.5" places him among the nations leaders and 21.88 points. Sophomores Antwone Lindsey (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) and Christopher Watson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) have earned a combined 24.55 points. The Triple Jump has been dominated by freshman as Kevin Jamison (Hillside, Ill./Proviso West), Kebba Bojang (Madison, Wis./Madison East), and Renanzo Williams (Clarksville, Tenn./Clarksville) lead the Spartans jumpers. Jamison's jump of 44' 7.5" earned him 20.44 points. The efforts of Bojang and Williams at the Sol Bulter Classic account for 22.88 points. The UD vaulters are led by Kashden Nelson (Rio, Wis./Stoughton) with a mark of 13' 9.25" for 20.20 points and the number two spot in the region. Temwa Phiri(Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Joe Spencer (Kansas City, Mo./Parkhill South) rank sixth and seventh in the region scoring 20.72 points. Lindsey has also scored 15.71 points in the High Jump at 6" 4.75". Sophomore Drextal Jackson(Madison, Wis./Verona) is currently eighth in the region with a Shot Put distance of 46' 0.5" and 8.15 points.

Two Spartan relay teams are scoring after the second week of competition with the Distance Medley team of Thomas OKeefe (Aregua, Paraguay/Madison Memorial), Blair Burdt (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington), David Martin (Iowa City, Iowa/City High), and Jordan Murray (DeWitt, Iowa/Central DeWitt) currently third in the Central Region at 11:53.67. The mens 4x400m Relay team of Sierra, Ryan Mattingly (Janesville, Iowa/Janesville), JaVaughn Busch (Chicago, Ill./Senior), and DeVante Miller (Markham, Ill./Bremen) are fifth in the region with a time of 3:31.84.

The Spartan women are led by Alexis Higgins (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) with the second best High Jump in the region at 5' 4.25" and 20.96 points. Freshman Pole Vaulter Brenda Breimon (Oconomowoc, Wis./Slinger) is fifth in the region with a 10' 0.0" mark and 14.04 points. Sophomores Nikki McKenzie (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) and Ranita Anderson(Chicago, Ill./Thornridge) are each scoring in the jumps. McKenzie is fourth in the Long Jump at 16' 4.25" and 15.97 points with Anderson scoring in the Triple Jump at 30' 3.5" and 7.19 points.

Tieisha Starks (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) is currently scoring in 60m Dash with an 8.18 mark and 15.17 points. Starks is also a member of the women's 4x400mRelay teamthat ran the third fastest time in the region at 4:17.78 at the Sol Butler Classic. Joining Starks on the relay team are Leigha Hodge (Madison, Wis./Lafollette), Kelley Hauber (Ridgeway, Iowa/South Winn.) and Kim Trinco (Schaumburg, Ill./JB Conant). Hauber is also scoring in the 800m Run at 2:31.57 and 11.44 points.
