Spartans Face #11 Simpson

DUBUQUE, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team hosted #11 Simpson College on Saturday afternoon inside Stoltz Sports Center. The Spartans and Storm treated everyone in attendance to a back-and-forth showdown with Simpson coming out on top 75-66. UD is now 12-4 overall and 2-3 in the Iowa Conference.

The Spartans were led offensively by senior guard Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) with 23 points. Whiting's jumper with 18 seconds left pushed her past 1,400 career points. She has now scored 20 or more points in six straight games and over 15 points in 10 in a row. Whiting finished with seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Leading by four at 60-56 with 4:30 left in the game, the Spartans were unable to match the offensive firepower of the Storm as Simpson closed the game on a 19-6 run. The largest lead of the night for UD came with 7:43 left in the second half as the Spartans went ahead 55-49. Dubuque used four three-pointers and a layup in a four minute stretch to cap a 14-1 run.

Spartan super-sub Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) once again provided a spark off the bench for UD as she scored 17 points including a season high five three-pointers. Schmidt has now scored 62 points and hit 12 threes over the past three games. Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) chipped in 13 points and recorded four steals. Making her first start of the season, Jena Darwin (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) pulled down ten rebounds.

As a team, the Spartans lead the IIAC in scoring offense at 72.2 points per game overall and 70.8 in conference action. In IIAC only games, Whiting leads the conference at 28.2 points per game.
