Spartans Win at Central

PELLA, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team picked up its first Iowa Conference road victory of the season with a 77-71 win over Central. The win was the 11th straight for the Spartans over Central. UD improves to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in the IIAC.

For the second game in a row the Spartans offense would come from the duo of Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) and Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton). Whiting and Schmidt combined for 53 of 77 points scored. Whiting led all scorers with 29 points, her fifth straight game over 20 points and ninth straight over 15 points. Schmidt once again provided a spark off the bench scoring 24 points in eight minutes of action in the second half. Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) scored ten points.

Down two with 45 seconds left in the first half, Jena Darwin (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie Senior) stepped to the free throw line and sank both to tie the game at 27-27 heading into halftime. The Spartans would open the second half from beyond the arc hitting four three-pointers to cap a 16-3 run that put UD ahead 41-30.

Leading the Spartans on the boards were centers Darwin and Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) with seven rebounds each. Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) finished with a team high six assists, five steals, and three blocks to go with six points and four rebounds.

The Spartans largest lead of the game came with 6:25 left in the second half when Schmidt scored her fourth straight point to put UD ahead 62-46.

Whiting moved into fourth all-time at UD with 535 career field goals made. Whiting's five assists pushed her career total to 197, good for tenth in school history. Remakel continued her climb up the all-time blocks list into fifth place with 71 career blocks.

In Iowa Conference only games, the Spartans improved on their IIAC leading scoring offense pushing their points per game average to 72. In addition, Whiting leads the conference with a scoring average of 29.5 points per game.
