Spartans Lose Lead Late in Road Loss

PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team is beginning to not like the final minute of the basketball games the past seven days. A week ago, the Spartans witnessed a comeback from the Coe College Kohawks and narrowly captured the road win by four points, 63-59, as the Kohawks sank 4 three point shots in :42 seconds. Over the weekend the Spartans battled back in the final minute only to have the victory taken away in overtime by the Buena Vista Beavers 68-70. And tonight, up by as much as seven points with 3:44 left, UD would suffer another close loss. The Central Dutch trailed by a basket with under a minute to go, drives for the basket, kicks it out to an open three point hand and it was good to take the lead by a point. The Spartans missed their shot attempt, fouled the Dutch rebounder and he would sink both free throw attempts to extend the Dutch lead 58-61. With five seconds left of the game, UD throws the ball down court only to have it picked off and that was the ball game, a 58-61 loss to the host Central College Dutch.

The Spartans four losses this season are a combined 19 points, overall UD has been out scoring their opponents on average by 8.9 points. Three Spartans finished the loss in double figures: Mitch Michaelis finished with the team high of 13 points as teammates Chris Frazier and Andre Norris would add 11 points each.

Jordan Townsend led the rebounding with seven and also led the team with six assists. The Spartans were out rebounded in the contest 35-33. UD did out score the Dutch in the paint 36-32, but were a chilly 2-10 from the three point area. UD sank 26-54 shot attempts (48.1%), but would send the Dutch to the free line 15 times and the Dutch sank 11 attempts. UD made 4-7 attempts at the free throw line.

The Spartans welcome the Simpson College Storm to Stoltz Sports Center on Saturday, Jan. 19 with tip-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
