DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team haven't found the start of the Iowa Conference season much to their liking in 2013. The Spartans have faced a tough schedule (playing two unbeaten teams in league play) and it just may be a season where one bounce of the ball could spell win or loss. Saturday night the Spartans hosted Buena Vista and after 39 and a half minutes UD trailed by a basket. An inbound ball which bounced off the leg of the Beavers gave UD another life and they would sink the basket to tie the contest at 64-64. A missed BV shot attempt and a UD rebound would be the end of regulation.

The host Spartans jumped out to an early four point lead in overtime, but the Beavers would not be stopped and captured the lead until the final minute. UD trailed by a basket as the Beavers missed a free throw with under 10 seconds remaining. The Spartans gathered the rebound and quickly dribbled down the court and went for the game tying basket from about 10 feet on the ride side of the court only to have it fall short as the Beavers grabbed the game winning rebound as the clock expired. Buena Vista remained unbeaten in Iowa Conference play with the 70-68 overtime victory. The score was tied 10 times and the lead changed seven times in the contest.

Mitch Michaelis led the scoring attack with 24 points where he made 6-14 shots from the field and was an impressive 9-10 at the free throw line. Andre Norris added 12 points and Lucas Ware 10 points off the bench. Jordan Townsend finished with 10 points and four assists in the loss. UD made 23-62 attempts including 5-15 three point shots. UD scored 15 points off turnovers, but it was the BV bench which out scored UD 31-22. The Spartans sent BV to the free throw line 32 times where they sank 20 attempts.

The Spartans travel to Pella on Jan. 19 where they will face the Central Dutch. Central is 0-3 in the IIAC and 7-6 overall for first year coach Craig Douma. Tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m. UD will host Luther College 3-0 in IIAC and 10-4 overall on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 4:00 p.m.
