Spartans with Hard Earned IIAC Road Victory

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Mens Basketball team did one of the hardest things to do in the Iowa Conference (IIAC), win on the road. The Spartans 63-59 victory over Coe College on Wednesday night was clinched with three free throws in the last 17 seconds. UD improves to 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the IIAC.

After leading by 9 points with 47 seconds left in the second half, UD clinched the game from the free throw line. The Spartans needed two Caleb Konieczny (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) free throws with six seconds remaining in the game to hold off the Kohawks as they made three three-pointers in 23 seconds to draw within a point with 20 seconds remaining.

The Spartans were led offensively by Mitch Michaelis (LeClaire, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) with 15 points on 6-10 shooting from the field. Andre Norris (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) came off the bench to score 10 points in 14 minutes.

UD held its largest lead of the game with 5:06 left in the first half when Derek Griffin (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo) made a layup to put the Spartans up by 17. Griffin finished with nine points and seven rebounds in the game. Chris Frazier (Heidelberg, Germany/Heidelberg) made 4-5 shots from the field to score nine points.
