Spartans Lose on Buzzer Beater

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team went down to the wire with Coe College on Wednesday night in another exciting Iowa Conference game. Tied at 62-62 and having possession of the ball, the Spartans were looking for the last shot of the game. As UD tried to setup for the final shot, the Kohawks turned up the pressure and forced a Spartan turnover that led to fast break layup for Coe as time expired to down the Spartans 64-62. UD is now 10-3 overall and 0-2 in the Iowa Conference.

UD was led offensively once again by Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) with 26 points. Whiting finished as the Spartans leading scorer for the fourth straight game and ninth time this season. Through two IIAC games, Whiting leads the conference at 32.0 points per game, is a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line, and is averaging a league best 33.5 minutes per game.

The Spartans bench scored 26 points in the game with Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) leading the second unit with eight points. Krystal Pritchett (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) also scored seven points off the bench. Whiting and Jena Darwin (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie) finished with a team high five rebounds with Darwin pulling down four offensive boards.

Defensively the Spartans forced 23 turnovers with 12 resulting in steals. Darwin, Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead), Alexis Lozano-Dobbs (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk), and Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) all had two steals. Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) had two blocks in the contest. The UD defensive effort led to 26-15 points off turnover advantage.
