Spartans Open IIAC Action on the Road

WAVERLY, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team opened Iowa Conference (IIAC) action with a 78-73 loss at Wartburg College (8-4, 1-0). The Spartans loss snapped a school record nine game win streak. Senior Mollie Whiting (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) finished with 38 points in the game. UD is now 10-2 on the season and 0-1 in the IIAC.
Whiting scored the first eight points for the Spartans as UD took an 8-7 lead three minutes into the game. After keeping the game close for the next 13 minutes, UD would once again take the lead at 33-32 with 2:22 left on two Whiting free throws to cap a 13-4 run. Jennifer Fischer (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) would make two free throws with 33 seconds left to give UD a 37-36 lead.
Wartburg would make a layup as time expired to take a 38-37 lead going into halftime. Whiting would finish the first half with 24 points to lead all scorers. UD held a 13-10 advantage in points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
The Spartans would tie up the game at 40-40at the 17:13 mark in the second half on a Whiting layup. The Knights would then go on a 18-2 run to open up an insurmountable lead.
On the defensive side of the court, Whiting and Heather Chapman (Ingleside, Ill./Grant) would finished with a team high three steals.Stephany Remakel (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) blocked four shots in thr game to give her 26 on the season. The Spartans finished 16-19 (84.2%) from the free throw line.
Whiting's 37 points in the game are the most points scored in game by anyone in the Iowa Conference this season. As a team, UD is leading the IIAC with 72.7 points per game while outscoring their opposition by an average of 17.6 points per game.
Whiting moved into sixth place in school history for career points with 1,297 points. She needs 32 points to pass Jessica Cox who sits in fifth place with 1,328 points.
