UD Captures Thriller on the Road

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team will end 2012 with a 10-1 overall mark after taking the road victory on Friday night over Monmouth College 76-71. 

The Spartans leading scorer, Derek Griffin, sank a jumper with :31 seconds to go to knot the contest at 67-67. Monmouth called a timeout with 16 seconds left of regulation and attempted a three point shot by Wes DeCleroq in the final second only to have it miss and send the game into overtime. The hosts jumped out to an early overtime lead after sinking a three point basket. UD took the lead with 2:42 left of overtime on a jumper by Andre Norris. Mitch Michaelis connected three free throws down the stretch to help secure the 10th victory for the Spartans. 

The Spartans led by three points after the first half 39-36 and shot 55.6% from the field. UD struggled from the outside and would finish the contest making just 8-31 three point attempts (25.8%). Derek Griffin led with 20 points making 8-10 shots from the field. Chris Frazier added 16 points and Jordan Townsend finished with 10 points. Isaiah Reeves led all rebounding in the game with 14, which included nine defensive boards. 

The Spartans open the 2013 campaign on the road at Wartburg College on January 5, tip-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
